We are asked these questions regularly, but if you have a question that isn’t listed here – please don’t be afraid to ask!
To get your first provisional driving licence for a car, motorbike, moped or other vehicle upi have to apply online here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
Your provisional driving licence has a shelf life, so you will need to ensure you have completed your driving test successfully before that time. The good news is a provisional driving licence lasts 10 years, so for most applicants, this shouldn’t be a problem.
To book a test online
You need your:
- UK driving licence number
- email address
- credit or debit card

You can book online.
According to the latest information on the Government website you’ll be put in a queue when you start booking your driving test – you’ll be told how long you’ll need to wait once you begin. This is faster than booking by phone because the phone lines are very busy at the moment.
You can book a test up to 24 weeks in the future. There is no waiting list or cancellation list.
This service is available from 6am to 11:40pm.
Change your driving test appointment
Use this service to:
- find an earlier driving test (sometimes called a ‘cancellation appointment’)
- move your driving test to a later date
- change which test centre you take your test at.
You must give at least 3 full working days’ notice to change your test or you’ll have to pay again. Monday to Saturday count as working days but Sundays and public holidays do not.
